Okay before I get too far into it, I want it to be said: I loved Winter. 110% true. So even when I point out a few things that I didn’t love, which are honestly very few and far between, I don’t ever want it to come across as if I didn’t love the book. I did.
Let’s talk about what I completely adored. The first being the storyline. It’s different. It’s an edge of your seat page turner, and the suspense is mixed flawlessly with the romantic aspects. In the words of my husband as he read over my shoulder, “Man, this is a heavy book.” For as heavy and intense as the storyline can be at times, the love story never takes a hit. It blends together perfectly. I don’t normally even try dark books, and I don’t know that this is necessarily dark, but I can’t say for certain that this story hasn’t been done before. But as far as I know, it’s unlike anything else you’ll read. It dives deep into some touchy subjects, but works through it beautifully.
I loved the characters. They’re very well developed, and by “they”, I mean the entire ensemble. The two main characters of course, but it goes so much deeper than that. The best friend, the roommate, the potential love interest, the horrible mother, or the family that has always cared. You’ll know more information and history on all of these characters than some other books might give on the main character entirely. I love that she gives you all of that. I didn’t just want to see what happened next out of curiosity; I truly cared for these people.

Okay so…there is this one thing. This book would have easily been a 5 star read for me, but there were editing errors. There were a couple of things in Winter that did distract me and took away from the story. Names being misspelled, inconsistencies within the story as far as the past goes, and many words that seemed to disappear into thin air. You know what the author means, so you go with it and move along, but after so many of those instances, it starts adding up. I’m never one to dock points from a book or author because of editing mishaps, but this seemed to have more obvious, “big” errors than I had seen before. With a bit more cleanup, like I said, this would be 5+ stars in my opinion.
Overall, this is a nail biting suspense with a love story that will make you swoon. I had to read Winter in one sitting because I HAD to know what happened in Avery’s past. It will keep you intrigued from the very first page, and won’t let go until after that exciting ending. Besides the editing I mentioned above, I would gladly recommend this book to all of my friends.
