I need a minute.
I wish I could say I was clever enough to use that seeing as how it’s a Kiera/Kellan thing, but no seriously, I need a minute.
Can I take a second to just have a mini-freak out? Kellan…Freaking…Kyle is back ya’ll! Kellan Kyle! Kellan! Kyle!!! Ahhhhhh. Kellan, in all of his swoonworthy, sexy, delicious glory. Sigh. I’ve missed him so.
I’m not going to explain who he is or what this story is about because I’m betting you know, even if you haven’t read the books, which in that case – what are you waiting for?! That’s beside the point, let’s just talk about what I absolutely loved.

My poor, broken Kellan. Bless his heart. He needs some Erin love and I’ll gladly give it to him. He’s so confident, so cocky, so sure of himself, right? Nope. He’s unsure of everything, feels like he’s unworthy of love, and he’s just… sad. He’s sad so much of the time. You get glimpses, you know his past and how the relationship with his parents affected him, but you have no idea until you see it through his eyes and feel what he feels. Your heart will break. Your heart will physically ache for him. But as heartbreaking as it feels through such a large portion of this book, that doesn’t make it hard to read. If anything, it was even easier this time around. Seeing his love for Kiera, the war waging on in his mind on whether to go forward knowing it was hurting Denny, and the constant up and down of right and wrong. It was amazing feeling how he felt and knowing what was going on, especially in some of the more memorable scenes.
Let’s talk about those scenes. I was nervous because I’m not a fan of rereading a story from a different pov. Every so often, one sticks but normally, I’m kinda meh about it. I was really scared, because I didn’t want to feel that way about this. I desperately needed more Kellan in my life, and if it meant a retelling, I’d take it. I’m beyond thrilled to say that I LOVED seeing it from his view. Some scenes, it is very similar to Thoughtless. It has to be, because they were such huge moments in their relationship. But to know what he was thinking changes how you’ll read those, forever. Some things that might have seemed very cut and dry before aren’t at all. It gives it a whole new dimension. Experiencing Bumbershoot, the espresso stand, the rain scene, the big fight in the back room through his eyes? It’s all absolutely perfection. Chapter 25? Owned me. OWNED. ME. I promise, you will not be disappointed. Although it’s all scenes we know and love, it still feels fresh and new. It never, not once, felt repetitive.
On top of that, there’s so much going on behind the scenes that we never knew. The band, how he felt during the breakup, etc. There’s just so much there! His relationship with Evan is so heartwarming. Evan is loyal and has Kellan’s back, no matter what. Seeing their bond was truly beautiful. It’s what friends are made of. You really see so much more of the band as a whole, and it brings so much fun and lightness to this very intense story. You also get a more in depth look into Kellan and Denny’s friendship and past. You’ll feel their connection and see how much they really mean to one another. We know that Denny was there and knew about Kellan’s parents, but you really dive into how Denny saved him and helped him. It almost makes it hurt even more when the relationship between Kellan and Kiera starts really building, even though you know what happens.
Overall, I’m so in love with these characters and this entire series, but Thoughtful took it to a whole new level. Although some of the insane angst we all felt in Thoughtless is missing, there’s just something else entirely. It’s intense, it’s emotional, and it’s passionate. Like I mentioned, it is sad and gets pretty deep, but we all know how this story ends. Don’t let the sad moments deter you, just embrace it. Live in his head for a while and love every second of it. I took my time and read this book over the course of a month. Savor it. Enjoy this wild roller coaster all over again with a new spin on it. Now I’m just heartbroken that it’s over.
