Where has Katie Kacvinsky been all of my life? Why am I just learning about her?! I. Love. Her.
I signed up for Finally, Forever not realizing that it was the third in a series. I started it and it just kind of felt like I SHOULD know these characters. I did notice that the author notes that it can be read as a standalone. I agree, if you went straight into this book, you would still enjoy it. But if you ever listen to a piece of advice from this blog, please let it be this one - Don’t skip the first two books in this series. Finally, Forever would still be a great read and would make your heart all warm and fuzzy by itself but you would miss out on Gray and Dylan’s full story. And what a story it is. Trust me, you DON'T want to miss out on a single word of their relationship.
I have a lot of favorite books. Within those books, I have a lot of favorite characters. Not a single one can compare to Dylan. She’s...I don’t even know what to say about her. She’s quirky. She’s not your normal heroine we’ve all read about in other books. She lives in her own world, and I mean that very literally. Dylan refuses to settle down. She wants to see the world and experience everything that she would be missing by staying in one place. Through the first two books, you’ll experience Dylan meeting Gray (who I also completely adore. It's not all about Dylan. He is so perfect for her, and you'll fall head over heels in love with him), the beginning of their relationship, and her leaving. More than once. She breaks Gray’s heart, he breaks hers, it’s a back and forth that you’re not sure will ever be resolved. I sort of feel bad for anyone who read these as they were released because the waiting game after finishing each would have killed me. I couldn't get enough of these characters and their lives though. You know when you're so enthralled with a book that time just disappears? You're living and breathing that book? That was me with all three of these. I don't know what I'm going to do when I start a new book and I don't have Gray and Dylan.
In Finally, Forever, by some crazy coincidence (although Dylan would say it was meant to work out that way for a reason), Dylan and Gray end up at the same place in Omaha, and Dylan needs a ride to New Mexico. Ahh I'm such a sucker for a good road trip story but this one goes above and beyond. They have some interesting situations come up along the way and it makes for such a fun tale. Throughout it all, they're trying to come to terms with their feelings. They're both still so completely in love with one another after all of the time that has passed since they broke up, (spoiler there! Sorry about that!) Gray expects he'll have to let her go, because that's what you do with Dylan - You let her go to do her own thing. He's the only person who understands her but it breaks him to have to do it. Dylan is trying to sort out what to do with herself and how to make it work with the love of her life. It's just all very emotional. The unknown is the worst part for me, because you WANT them to finally have their happily ever after. In every book, you'll think "Okay this is it. This is their time." and sure enough, you're proven wrong. So I couldn't help but be a bit leery of this one because I just wanted them to get their fairytale ending so badly! Without giving away too much, I will say my heart was very happy. Everything came together like perfect little puzzle pieces, and it ended exactly like I hoped. Katie couldn't have written a better ending, in my opinion.
And Katie. Okay I'm almost mad at myself for not learning of Katie Kacvinsky before this week. Where have I been?! She's amazing. Her writing is unlike anything else out there. She's fun and feisty and I just adore her. I'll gladly scream it from the rooftops: I'm a Katie Kacvinsky fangirl! I devoured this series because of the story and the characters, but only because the writing was so right.
Overall, this book is the perfect combination of an intriguing storyline, fantastic humor, and a heartwarming love story. You just never know where Dylan and Gray's story will lead but they keep you interested from page to page. It's so different. It's creative, spunky, and so refreshing. You'll get sucked into their tale and won't want to let go. I highly recommend not just Finally, Forever but the entire First Comes Love series.
