I don’t read on planes. Well, I do but I’m so easily distracted, that on a 3 hour plane ride, I’m lucky if I ge 3 chapters read. This past weekend, I flew to Houston for RT. I had started Dirty English earlier in the day and thought I’d never finish it anytime soon. I had 4 flights in 24 hours (I know I’m crazy) and I’d be lucky if I got a few chapters read. When I got in my seat, I opened my iPad with very good intentions on reading, and guess what? Dirty English sucked me in. It grabbed me so hard that not only did I read on the plane, I devoured it and had it finished on my first flight. That’s how amazing it was.
Dirty English is a gritty and emotional book. It sucks you, drags you around and spits you out when it’s done. You have the story of Elizabeth, who is damaged. Damaged in such a way you understand why she is the way she is. She is queen of one night stands. She doesn’t get her heart involved at all. She has 2 close friends, who she’s been friends with before the incident and who have stuck with her throughout. She relies on them for everything. And then she meets Declan.
Declan is a dirty English fighter. But even though he is everything Elizabeth hates, he worms his way in. He breaks down her walls no matter how many times she tries to rebuild them. He knew he wanted her and not just for a one night stand. He knew she was the one. And he was going to get in there, no matter how many times she pushed him away.

I really loved Dirty English but I had some issues with it. Starting about 60ish% I felt things got too easy. The strong gritty story, got happy. But in a odd way. There were events that happened towards the end, I felt should have affected Elizabeth, way more than they did. Yes, it shows growth and shows how much Declan broke down her walls, but I started missing the grittiness. At times it even felt like it was two different stories. The beginning gritty and angsty and the end happy go lucky. They just didn’t seem to match up so much.
Ilsa Madden-Mills did an awesome job with this gritty drama. She brought the grit. She brought the angst. She made me feel for Elizabeth and root for Declan. She brought out emotion. And she got me to read on a plane.
