It makes me so sad to have to say this but…I didn’t love Whiskey Prince. Ahhh! It hurts to even type it and I feel like I want to go cry in a corner. Toni Aleo is one of my favorites. I think we all get so settled into our faves that we wonder if we truly love every single word they write, or if we just convince ourselves we do. After reading Whiskey Prince, it’s very clear to me that your favorites don’t always write something that will jump on your Top Book list. It’s okay. It happens. It’s sad when it does but it DOES happen. I fully expect to 200% love any following novels by Toni but this one…it just didn’t do it for me.
I think the biggest thing was that it was - ugh, I hate this - boring. Let me explain. It’s very sweet. Sugary sweet. Cotton candy, hurts your teeth, way overboard sweet. I think that was my problem. It was too nice. There’s some conflict, tension, and drama but I saw through it. You know it’s going to work itself out. I will say, the ending was a surprise. It felt like the rest of the book was pretty predictable yet the very end was anything but predictable.
I felt like the writing itself is all-American Toni Aleo. That’s what hurts so badly. It felt like a Toni novel, just without that flair that she always has. It was just missing something. The characters were well developed. You’ll really dive in, and know their stories and background. The side characters were also well developed and thought out. The storyline sounds so interesting, but it just never really picked up for me. I finished it because let’s be honest, I’m not going to NOT finish a book by her. I love her too much. Maybe I was comparing it too often to the Assassins series, and this is definitely not hockey players. It’s very different.
Overall, the story itself is cute. It’s a sweet tale that makes you wish for your own prince charming to come along and sweep you off of your feet. It moves along at a good pace and the characters seem semi-realistic. It’s emotional and can tug at your heartstrings at times. It just didn’t blow me away, but I won’t say I didn’t like it. I did. I liked it, but didn’t love it. Being a big fan of this author’s work though, I still highly suggest you go try it for yourself. It’s been a weird week for me so maybe that’s the reason. I feel like I should reread it at a later time and try again. So please, give it a whirl. It’s not bad AT ALL, it’s just not my favorite of hers. If you aren’t looking for something that will turn your world upside down or wreck your emotions, but instead just a very sweet romantic story, then this is the book for you. There’s not a single thing wrong with it, it just didn’t strike my fancy as much as Aleo’s others do.
