Jack Dalton. You own my heart, you sensitive little rock god. Ahh. Give me a minute to stop fantasizing about him, so I can actually write my review.
Okay so at first glance, you would think this is a story of a rock star. Simple as that. USUALLY what you get with rock star books are…well…sex, drugs, and rock & roll. What if a story was written about the guy beneath the public image though? That type of story would be fantastic, and that’s exactly what S.L. Scott has given us. This book was a bit of everything we love from this genre, but combined just enough to make it a happy medium. It’s not TOO dark, it’s not TOO light. It’s not all sexual, but definitely doesn’t lack the hot factor. It was also just creative enough. It’s not your generic rocker story. You don’t hear about the live shows, the groupies, the drugs, etc. Instead, you learn of his inner demons, his past, and his relationship with the woman who saves him, Holliday. (I LOVE her name btw. So cute!)
I loved these characters. Holliday is a strong, independent, successful woman. She doesn’t fangirl over Jack’s celebrity status (I just used the word fangirl in a review. Sheesh), she doesn’t use him for her own personal gain. She is her own woman and I love that about her. She doesn’t even know that he is a celebrity when they meet. (Their first meeting could be one of my favorite scenes in a book.) As much as I loved Holliday and how strong she was for him, Jack was by far my favorite character. He has shot right up to the top next to my other favorite rockers, but not for that reason. Like I said, the rocker aspect just takes a backseat. It’s everything else in their lives that made me fall in love with this character. His sensitive side, how he puts his emotions out there for her, how much he just NEEDS her in his life. Even though he messes up a few times, he has the best intentions. Although his public image is that of a rough, badass front man known as Johnny Outlaw, Jack is everything but those things.
I also loved the writing but that’s to be expected with S.L. Scott. She hasn’t let me down yet, and I highly suggest all of her novels. Her books are so emotional, detailed, and just beautifully written.
Overall, seriously…just go one-click this one. It doesn’t get much better than Jack Dalton and his love for Holliday Hughes.
