Gahhh, I loved this book! LOVED. This book. It was a slow burn for me, but when it caught fire? Whoa. It was surprising and had a different feel than many others by Glines, but no less wonderful than any previous releases. If anything, it just might be my new favorite novel by Abbi. Who am I kidding… it is my new favorite!
First and foremost, I absolutely adored these characters. As in, I’m slightly obsessed with them. They’re very different from past characters we’ve met by Glines, but they definitely have the complexities that she’s so great at. You can’t help but care for them, love them, hurt with them, and everything in between. Also, I know this is a no-no to compare authors and/or books, but River/Captain had a very alpha, Kristen Ashley-esque feel to him. The bad boy who does right by his woman. You know the type. Captain makes me a swoony little mess because he loves SO incredibly deeply. Sigh… The relationship between Addy and River, both past and present, is touching in many different aspects, and you’ll fall hopelessly in love with them. The trials they go through will break your heart, but there’s really nothing like a good second chance. Add in Glines’ writing style and really, these characters and their story is pure magic.

As mentioned, it was a slow burn. I do feel like I need to point out that this very likely could have been due to other aspects of my life at the time. Any number of things might have steered my mindset off course, and that could have been the reasoning for my lack of enthusiasm for The Best Goodbye in the beginning. I was very nervous that this would be the first release by Glines in a long time that I really didn’t adore. Not only did it smash that idea, but it also quickly became my new favorite. By 35%, the story took off for me and there was no looking back at that point. Once I found myself fully immersed in the story, it became a 5:00 AM, bags under my eyes sort of morning because I couldn’t put it down. I had to finish.
Overall, it’s classic Abbi Glines with addictive characters and a charming yet heartbreaking second chance story, mixed with a smidge of a different feel than you might be used to. It’s a phenomenal addition to the Rosemary Beach series. I’ll be suggesting this one for a while, and can’t rave about it enough.
