How does she do this?! Every dang time. There’s always one certainty when starting a book by Karina Halle. You will feel. You’ll feel everything. Every kiss. Every glance. Every heart achingly raw moment. She demolished my heart with Love, in English, and she’s done it again with Racing the Sun.
Halle has perfected the art of building a world in a faraway land, with complex characters and in depth, enthralling storylines. Racing the Sun is no different there. The characters are so interesting, with stories that could hold their own individually. Amber, her travels, and her relationship with her parents or Derio and…well…his life as a whole, honestly. It’s all just so intriguing to me, but when you mesh these two characters together, you’ll see stars. Their connection is sexy, tense, but unbelievably romantic. Good grief, can Halle write a couple in love. Whew.

Throughout the story, you’ll see and feel so many changes in the characters and how they live their lives. There’s a lot of facing fears and opening their eyes to what is right in front of them. Seeing these changes, as well as the maturity, the protectiveness, and the opening of their hearts to one another made for a phenomenal experience while reading. I think if there’s one thing that Halle is better at than almost anyone, it’s letting you watch a couple truly fall in love. Not instalove. Not a relationship that moves much too quickly. She allows you to fall in love with them, through all of the up’s and downs, twists and turns, heartbreak, and heart mending moments.
Now let’s talk about Italy. I need to go ASAP. First, she makes me want to go to Spain, then I was desperate to visit New Zealand. I think this one takes the cake though. She paints such a vivid picture of Capri, and now I’m begging my husband to let me go. Truly. Begging. Shall we all take a bookworm trip to Italy?! Someone say yes! Halle uses stellar writing to build such breathtaking descriptions, you’ll swear you’re standing there next to the characters. Now I can’t wait for the next. Halle’s novels are like my own personal escape to dreamy countries that I might not ever visit in my lifetime. Instead, I get to live vicariously through Halle’s words.
Overall, Racing the Sun is an easy (although their story itself is not) and addictive read, with sensual, angsty, and sometimes heartbreaking moments between two characters who need one another more than they can even imagine. It’s watching these two open their hearts, facing their fears, and moving into the future, knowing it’ll always be okay with the love of one another. It’s so simple huh? Love can cure all. Racing the Sun is absolutely a new favorite by Karina.
So...where are we going next?
