I’m positive I do this every time I write a review for Aleo hockey, but can we take a second to have a little fangirling fit? Seriously, how does the woman do it?! Every time, she writes compelling, addictive storylines that not only tug on your heartstrings, but she rips them out effortlessly and I look forward to it. Overtime is just another example of Aleo’s brilliance in building storylines and characters that are not only leaps and bounds, but also mountains greater than many others. Mountains, I tell ya.
I think the first thing that comes to mind when I consider Overtime as a whole is how much deeper it was. The seriousness of the subject matter and the struggles that are endured throughout the story, between not only Jordie but also Kacey, seems to move it away from the normally fun yet emotional tales of the Assassins. We all know what to expect from Aleo. There’s always a complication that must be beat, but this one caused… more. More heartbreak, more anticipation, more hope, more fear. It took a toll on my emotions, my heart, and my mind. I anxiously (while terrified, if I’m being honest) waited the moment that all hell would break loose. I won’t tell you if it does or not, but just know that this story isn’t light and fluffy. It’s… it’s something else entirely.

I did enjoy that it wasn’t one sided. Each character is broken in entirely different ways and for a variety of reasons, but they heal one another. They need the unconditional love of each other. Not just want, but they NEED that. It’s a beautiful story of how two individuals can become one, in such a bigger sense than only falling in love. I sort of want to cry, just thinking about it. Their story will take your breath away in the most amazing way.
As mentioned above, this book seemed to be... I don’t want to use the word dark, because it’s not. But it’s serious. It covers more than one issue that is dealt with in every family at some point, and it will hit you hard. BUT… that doesn’t mean every word and every chapter has that deeper, intense feeling. I mean, we’re talking about the Assassins. You KNOW it’s bound to be goofy and of course, hysterical. Hockey players + Facebook = Quite possibly the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time. Seeing the guys, with all of their many personalities and traits, come together was fantastic, and I ate it up. You also see the wives and they’re still just as witty and loveable as before. I want to be an Assassin wife. Just sayin’
It felt like to me that you didn’t see as much hockey in this one as previous books, but for good reason. There’s a lot going on and it deserves the attention. But when you did find yourself in that hockey arena, it was like coming home and brought the warm and fuzzies with that exhilarating, adrenaline-filled feeling of rooting for your favorites. It also seemed as though there weren’t as many sex scenes as before, but again, it took a backseat and it worked. When they did pop up though, whew… make sure the hubby is on standby.
Overall, Overtime is yet another emotionally intense, enthralling, and all consuming addition to the Assassins series. Aleo can do no wrong, and she’s proven it time and time again. While we knew that she could cover touchy topics and handle them with care, Overtime took it to a new level. You’ll feel every ounce of hope, fear, and above all else, love just as Jordie and Kacey experience it. I have no doubt they’ll be one of your new favorite couples in the series. Overtime produces such a wide range of emotions while teaching a meaningful, powerful message of finding the people most important to you that will make your life worth living. It’s just a beautiful tale, but come on, it’s Toni Aleo. It’s why I adore her.
