Wow. Well that… That was not what I expected. I’m not sure what I expected. Once I got a few chapters in and sort of saw where the story was heading, I thought I had it in the bag. I thought I knew exactly what would happen, but at that point, I was already too addicted and had to know if I was right. Um… I wasn’t right. I LOVE being not right! This book is emotional, gut-wrenching, and will make you think. Hard. That type of book, the ones that affect you even if the story itself has nothing to do with your own life, well… those are my favorites.
I won’t give a full run down of what the book was about, but rather just jump into what I loved about it. The first being how original One Last Song is. As stated above, I thought I knew. I thought it was going to be tragic and heartbreaking a la The Fault in Our Stars. It is tragic. It is heartbreaking. Just not in the way I predicted. It took a left turn somewhere, or maybe it was the very first page now looking back, but it’s unique. It’s different. You won’t find THIS story anywhere else. Different is so important in the romance genre, and Falls nailed it.
I’m still sort of sitting here in awe that she took a character that in all honesty, none of us should like, and made me end up rooting for her and loving her. She’s selfish, she’s an attention whore, she’s so very wrong but yet, I wanted nothing more than to care about her. For every one time I wanted to scream at her for doing something so horrible, I’d end up wanting to hug her twice as much. It takes a true author to make you change your feelings entirely, from not liking the main character to wanting nothing but the best for her. That’s how I felt by the end.

The transformation that takes place before your very eyes on each and every page is absolutely beautiful. Seeing Saylor change from the selfish person she was to this caring, loyal friend was everything you’d hope for. Watching her realize what’s truly important - the people she meets and the friendships she gains - will have you crying tears of joy. Amongst those lessons, she falls in love, she reevaluates her life, and she realizes how important it is to be a good person for yourself and for others. It sounds so cheesy, I know, but seriously… Seriously. It will be a massive injustice if you don’t read this book.
One Last Song is a gorgeous tale of one girl’s life and how a few friendships and honest conversation can change everything. It’s eloquent. It’s fun and so easy to read because of it, yet has no shortage of intense, serious moments that will make you reconsider your own life. It’s a heartfelt story that will stick with you long after you’ve finished that last page. I’m officially a fan of S.K. Falls, and can’t wait for more.
