I love everything about this book. The writing, the storyline, the dialogue, the characters. All of it. I enjoyed Renee Carlino’s other books, and I couldn’t wait to read this one. Nowhere But Here definitely has that Renee Carlino feel to it, and that’s a very good thing. It’s sweet, romantic, and heartwarming. I can’t recommend it enough.
This is the story of Kate and Jamie. Kate is a journalist from Chicago, who thinks she has no one in the world. Sure, she has friends but her mantra is “I’m all I’ve got”. That should tell you plenty, right? After her mother passed away when she was 8, she was taken in by her mother’s best friend, who died some months before her story begins. She’s alone, even as she’s in a relationship. She just feels like there’s no one else there for her. Don’t take that as this being a sad, depressing book though. It is so far from that. Kate is spunky and feisty. She‘s strong and determined. When she’s sent to California for an assignment on the elusive R.J. Lawson and his winery in Napa Valley, her world turns upside down. Gahhh I don’t know how to really describe the rest of the book without giving it away. She meets Jamie, an employee at the winery. They have an exciting, whirlwind fairytale romance for a few days, until things start to unravel. There’s broken hearts and tears, secrets kept and revealed, but most of all, Kate discovers herself. Kate & Jamie discover what it means to have a family and to be loved.
It’s a beautiful tale of two lost souls finding one another. It’s fun and a bit adventurous. Kate is hilarious, and will make you giggle with her randomness. Jamie is…he’s perfection. That’s it. He’s the swoonworthy, intelligent, strong male character we all love but a lot of authors don’t get quite right. But Jamie? No no, Renee got him just right. More than anything though, I loved this book because it is just SO sweet. It will melt your heart, even during the rough points in Kate and Jamie’s relationship. There were so many times I found myself smiling from ear to ear while reading. I’m also seriously considering attacking my husband with my lips when I get home from work, because it made me all mushy and emotional. I LOVE reading about couples in love. They don’t have to cheat, they don’t have to fight, they don’t HAVE to do any of that. Renee Carlino proves it with this one.
Overall, I can’t say enough great things about Nowhere But Here. To me, it’s the epitome of your classic romance novel. It will make you smile and laugh, break your heart, and then mend it together again. Go grab this one. It’s a keeper.
