Wow. Just wow.
While I know the type of person Brooklyn Taylor is as a friend, I wasn’t familiar with her actual work. I know - what kind of friend am I truly if I haven’t read her books, right? Well that little problem has been resolved, and the question I keep asking myself is “Why did it take me so long?!” Marital Blissaster was so much more addictive than I could have ever imagined. I hoped I would like it because of the author, but I wasn’t prepared to love it quite this much.
Let’s start from the get go. That prologue. Holy crap, that prologue. Because of the words on those 1 ½ pages in the very beginning, I was on edge throughout the entire story. Every page, every scene, every conversation. I was scared, antsy, and I loved it! I live for angst in romance novels, and Marital Blissaster gave it to me tenfold. I won’t go into what made me so nervous, but just be ready to live on the edge of your seat, waiting for that shoe to drop. Whew!

On top of the angst that Taylor serves on a silver platter, she builds a wonderfully addictive world that is so unique from many other storylines. Anytime a story is built around a married couple, it’s automatically a plus to me. Marriage is not easy, it can be hard work, but can be so fulfilling. It’s intriguing to me to read about married couples, because it’s real life. In Marital Blissaster, you’ll experience not one but two marriages, and you’ll ride those up’s and down’s with them. In my opinion, mixing fiction with what could be your every day life makes it so much easier to relate to the characters. No doubt about it, Taylor accomplished that.
This story has so many different elements to it, but they all flowed together perfectly. From the struggles of one marriage to questioning whether another is as perfect as it seems, you’ll never lack emotion while reading Marital Blissaster. Heartbreak, joy, shock, and of course love, there’s no shortage of the feels in this one. One thing I specifically really enjoyed, and this is SO unlike me, is the flashbacks. An abundance of scenes from the past will usually drive me crazy, but it was a necessity to truly grasp the complexities of Madison and Callie’s relationships. The depth of the characters, as well as their stories, is heightened because of the flashbacks. I loved seeing where they began and how they got to where they are now. It was almost like two stories in one that somehow met in this beautifully tangled web.
There’s something else I want to type here, but I won’t because you should read it and find out for yourself why I would say…ya know…something like, “Holy crap, that surprise! What?!” ;)
One down side that I do feel like I have to mention is the editing and/or errors. As a blogger, we’re used to overlooking these. There were grammatical errors that bugged me, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. I do wish it were cleaned up a bit, only because Brooklyn Taylor, this story, and these characters deserve high praise. Seriously, this story is unbelievable and if it weren’t for the errors, this would be an easy 5 star for me. I loved living in their world, watching and waiting to see what would happen next. I just wish it read a little bit smoother.
Overall, I’ll keep it short and simple. If you’re like I am and love tension, anticipation, and not knowing what’s to come on the next page, then Marital Blissaster is for you. While many of us enjoy that sensation in tight situations, Callie and Madison’s lives with their significant others and how those relationships mesh together soars far beyond that emotion. It shows the struggles a marriage can realistically face, the dream of a perfect life together, and in the end, will cause you to reevaluate your own relationship. This one’s a keeper. Good job Brooklyn.
