A few weeks ago, we received a message from an author who requested that Southern Belle review her book. If you know anyone that blogs, you’ll know this happens a lot. A LOT. I have a hard time saying no to anyone, as in…I pretty much don’t say no. Like at all. But every so often, one just really catches my eye, and Elizabeth Wyke’s Call It Fate was one of those. Was it how absolutely adorable she was in chat conversations? Was it because she’s from Oklahoma? Well yea, probably both of those. One thing I wasn’t quite sure of was that she described it as “a new adult romance, with a sci-fi twist, for the fun of it.” Normally, this would have me running for the hills. Erin? Reading sci-fi, even if it is mixed with new adult? Noooo. But for some reason, the synopsis just pulled me in. I’m SO glad it did!
This book was such an easy story to read. It honestly flew by because I was so enthralled. I had to stop about 30% in to finish up a review for another book, and it KILLED me to have to put it down. I didn’t want to. I needed to know what happened on the next page or chapter. Everything about this book kept me wanting more.
Usually I’d give a brief summary here of what the book is about but honestly…I can’t. Her synopsis is perfect. It tells you exactly what you need to know without giving too much away. So here’s Goodreads. Go check that out.
These characters were very new adult, and I think that’s what I loved so much. I was still extremely leery of the whole sci-fi aspect of this book from what she described. There’s just something about imagining sci-fi type situations happening in real life? My brain can’t get there normally. (Because a rich, young entrepreneur who wants the innocent college grad to come play in his red room of pain is SO believable in our genre, right? I know. I get it.) But for some reason with Call It Fate, it was okay. More than okay. It was the perfect first book to try out sci-fi. Although there is A LOT there to take in with the storyline, it still revolved around the couple, Hannah and Rush. Their story is exactly what we all look for in the books we read. The romance, the angst, the sexiness. It’s all there in this one, and it's just SO good. The love story kept me interested in the beginning, but by the end, I needed every tiny detail Elizabeth could give about Exalitrote, trothing, the Black Guard, etc. She makes you believe it, and she does such a great job at it.
Speaking of Elizabeth, she’s incredible. Her writing is fantastic, truly. She’s so eloquent and the story itself was beautiful. I can’t wait to read more of her work. She has definitely gained a new fan, and I can’t wait to see what else she releases in the future.
