Okay it’s time. I have to do it. I’ve been putting off writing this review for almost a week now, but I’m just gonna go for it and hope I can see clearly enough through the tears to type my name at the end. This probably won’t make a ton of sense. It probably won’t flow. I honestly don’t care if it’s my standard review, I just need to get it on paper.
This book shattered me. You know that if you’ve heard anything about Bright Side. It’s an ugly cry, it’s emotional, so on and so forth. Until you’ve spent the time in Kate’s world, you’re not understanding the full impact. Yes, it is an ugly cry. Yes, it hurts. But hiding behind all of that pain is one of the most gorgeous stories I’ve ever read. Ever. Here come the tears…
I’ve never had a book affect me like this one did. I won’t give anything away, although I’m sure we all sorta know what happens in the end, but this book is so much bigger than just one girl’s story. It’s inspiring, it’s hopeful, it’s motivational. It’s a life changer. It makes you step back and look at your life. You’ll learn to not take a single day for granted, because every single one counts. Live in the here and now, because it might be all you get. I sound like a damn motivational poster.

Kate’s story has ruined me. Every coffee shop, every door jingle, every rock song on the radio, and every time someone uses the word “dude”. Those belong to Kate now, so stop it world! You’re making me tear up in my everyday life and it’s not okay! Seriously, everything about this story will stick with you. Kate’s quirkiness, the connection between her and Gus, the relationship between her and Keller. All of it. You won’t forget ANY of this one, and not only that, you’ll remember where you were and how you felt the very moment you read this book. Every scene and every conversation feels much too memorable to fade.
Look at all of these choppy sentences. I’m sorry. I did tell you it probably wouldn’t flow, right?
And let’s talk about Kim Holden for a second. I adore her writing style. It’s different, it’s quirky, and it’s fun. It’s unlike anything else you’ll read. Even if Kate’s story specifically wasn’t so addictive, I think Kim’s writing in itself is that addictive. She also handled a sensitive subject with such care. I can’t wait to devour any future books, including Gus’ story. I miss him so much already.
I’m gonna stop typing. This book is a beautifully written tale. It should be as simple as saying it’s the story of one girl’s semester in college, but it’s more massive than that. It’s the people she meets, the relationships she builds, and how having those people around can change your life. Kate’s story will turn your world upside down for the better, although it won’t feel that way at the time. Be prepared for the tears and heartbreak, but know that you’ll come out on the other end okay. My friend Clare probably said it best. It hurts but she felt very…content afterward. Like it all was supposed to have worked out the way it did. It’s painful, it’s emotional, and it will rip your heart out, but in the big scheme of things, you’ll feel okay about it all. You’ll feel resolved. I avoided Bright Side because I didn’t want to cry. Please do not do that. Pick up this book, hold it in your hands, and fall head first into it. Embrace it. My only regret is that I wasted so much time before I did read it. It has changed everything. Everything. It’s a masterpiece.
I love you, baby… I love you, baby. (My favorite line of the entire book, and it didn’t fit anywhere else, so I’m just sticking it here)
Do epic.
