I just finished this book, as in…maybe 5 minutes ago. You know when you read that last page and you keep swiping your finger, wanting the next page and the next chapter? You aren’t ready for their story to be over? That was me. Over and over again, with no such luck. Not because it didn’t end absolutely perfectly but because I just wanted more sweet interactions, more emotional moments, more special Logan kisses, just more of…everything. It was a breathtaking story and I wish there was a stronger word than love to describe my feelings for this book.
Usually the first thing I do in my reviews is sort of put the synopsis in Erin-form. I describe the basic idea of the book from my own thoughts. But really, the synopsis is perfect. So scroll up a bit and read it in case you haven't already. It tells you exactly what you need to know.
I enjoyed everything about this book. I love that Montes took such a deep subject matter and still managed to not make it too dark. Is it serious? Absolutely. She doesn’t lighten the mental illness that Jenna lives with. But she does take Jenna’s life and her relationship with Logan, and makes it fun, charming, and romantic during parts of the story. You’d think a book about a girl that is schizoaffective wouldn’t be described as any of those, but she does it and does it so well.
The characters were so interesting. To be inside the mind of someone that is schizoaffective was amazing and completely heartbreaking. It all seemed so true and on point. Montes definitely did her homework because you believe everything that Jenna goes through. Not to make light of her illness, but I loved that she also seemed like a normal 20 something female. She has crushes, she has had her heart broken. She has a best friend that would do anything for her (Charlie is AMAZING. So feisty and exactly what Jenna needed.) So even amongst feeling lost and secluded in her own mind, she still feels what anyone else would feel. Love, lust, and the tummy flutters. And Logan. Geez, Logan…he comes across as this arrogant asshole at first, but he’s truly one of the most romantic, loyal men you’ll find in a story. He’s…he’s swoonworthy. I use that word so much but in this case, it’s exactly the right word. He. Is. Fantastic. They both have pasts to overcome, and with one another's help, they achieve that.
The writing went above and beyond what we’re all used to, in my opinion. The descriptions, the characters, all of it was just…more. More intense, more eloquent, more vivid. Montes will pull you in so deeply into their story, you won’t feel like you’re sitting in your living room reading. You’ll be IN the story with Jenna and Logan, experiencing their lives with them.
Overall, I loved this book. It wasn’t as dark as I expected it to be, which is a huge plus was for me because I usually don’t really do dark. It was a stunningly written novel. It’s romantic, painful, and so hopeful all in one. It's different from the large majority of books out there right now, and I love that it is so creative. I can’t suggest it enough. I’m adding a quote that I’m sure if you’ve read more than one review of Perfectly Damaged, you’ve seen - many times probably. But it’s one of my new favorites.
“I didn’t have to dig deep to love you, Jersey girl. Digging takes work. Falling in love with you was the simplest thing I’ve ever done.”
Ahhh, swoon right?! Go get it.
